Lee Waves Break Eddy Saturation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current

چکیده

Eddy-resolving ocean models suggest that the transport of Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) may be insensitive to increasing wind. This insensitivity is due eddies flatten isopycnals and compensate for their wind-driven steepening. However, eddy-resolving do not accurately represent eddy dissipation processes occur at scales smaller than model resolution, including lee wave generation rough topography. Using a parameterization in an idealized Southern Ocean, we show ACC becomes more sensitive wind when drag included. The sensitivity arises from dependence on bottom stratification. When stratification increases response wind, it generation, hence dissipation, As result, shear (baroclinic transport) drive stronger compensate.

Scattering of barotropic Rossby waves by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current

[1] This study examines the interactions between barotropic Rossby waves and a zonal current, with particular reference to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). In the high latitude of the Southern Ocean, the effect, which provides the restoring mechanism for Rossby waves, is relatively weak, resulting in barotropic waves that are extremely long, with periods of the order of 1 week or longer...

Eddy-mediated transport of warm Circumpolar DeepWater across the Antarctic Shelf Break

The Antarctic Slope Front (ASF) modulates ventilation of the abyssal ocean via the export of dense Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) and constrains shoreward transport of warm Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) toward marine-terminating glaciers. Along certain stretches of the continental shelf, particularly where AABW is exported, density surfaces connect the shelf waters to the middepth Circumpolar Dee...

Meridional displacement of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

Observed long-term warming trends in the Southern Ocean have been interpreted as a sign of increased poleward eddy heat transport or of a poleward displacement of the entire Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) frontal system. The two-decade-long record from satellite altimetry is an important source of information for evaluating the mechanisms governing these trends. While several recent studie...

Optimal Growth of Antarctic Circumpolar Waves

Generalized stability theory is applied to a simple dynamical model of interannual ocean–atmosphere variability in the southern midlatitudes to determine the perturbations that create the most rapid growth of energy in the system. The model is composed of a barotropic quasigeostrophic atmosphere coupled to a 1.5-layer quasigeostrophic ocean, each linearized about a zonally invariant mean state,...
